چکیده

Noise can assist neurons in the detection of weak signals via a mechanism known as stochastic resonance (SR). We demonstrate experimentally that SR-type effects can be obtained in rat sensory neurons with white noise, 1yf noise, or 1yf2 noise. For low-frequency input noise, we show that the optimal noise intensity is the lowest and the output signal-to-noise ratio the highest for conventional white noise. We also show that under certain circumstances, 1yf noise can be better than white noise for enhancing the response of a neuron to a weak signal. We present a theory to account for these results and discuss the biological implications of 1yf noise. [S0031-9007(99)08727-X]

Noise Enhances Action Potential Generation in Mouse Sensory Neurons via Stochastic Resonance

Noise can enhance perception of tactile and proprioceptive stimuli by stochastic resonance processes. However, the mechanisms underlying this general phenomenon remain to be characterized. Here we studied how externally applied noise influences action potential firing in mouse primary sensory neurons of dorsal root ganglia, modelling a basic process in sensory perception. Since noisy mechanical...

Stochastic Resonance with Colored Noise for Neural Signal Detection

We analyze signal detection with nonlinear test statistics in the presence of colored noise. In the limits of small signal and weak noise correlation, the optimal test statistic and its performance are derived under general conditions, especially concerning the type of noise. We also analyze, for a threshold nonlinearity-a key component of a neural model, the conditions for noise-enhanced perfo...

Stochastic resonance in noisy spiking retinal and sensory neuron models

Two new theorems show that small amounts of additive white noise can improve the bit count or mutual information of several popular models of spiking retinal neurons and spiking sensory neurons. The first theorem gives necessary and sufficient conditions for this noise benefit or stochastic resonance (SR) effect for subthreshold signals in a standard family of Poisson spiking models of retinal ...

Resonance in a Chaotic Neuron Model Driven by a Weak Sinusoid

We show by numerical calculations that a chaotic neuron model driven by a weak sinusoid has resonance. This resonance phenomenon has a peak at a drive frequency similar to that of noise-induced stochastic resonance (SR). This neuron model was proposed from biological studies and shows a chaotic response when a parameter is varied. SR is a noise induced effect in driven nonlinear dynamical syste...

Effects of colored noise on stochastic resonance in a bistable system subject to multiplicative and additive noise.

The effects of colored noise on stochastic resonance (SR) in a bistable system driven by multiplicative colored noise and additive white noise and a periodic signal are studied by using the unified colored noise approximation and the theory of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in the adiabatic limit. In the case of no correlations between noises, there is an optimal noise intensities ratio R at which...
